చీమలు దూరని చిట్టడవి. కాకులు దూరని కారడవి. అడవిలో ఒక సింహరాజు ఉండేవాడు. అతని పనిలో సింహభాగం నిద్రకే కేటాయించే వాడు. వేటకు వెళ్లటం అరుదు. వేటకు వెళ్లాడంటే.. అంత బీభత్సంగా ఎవరూ వేటాడరు. ఎలానూ రాజు కాబట్టి.. అతని మాటలు అందరూ వినేవారు.
ఒక రోజు సింహరాజు వేటాడటానికి వెళ్లింది. అయితే ఏవీ దొరకలేదు.. చెట్టుమాటున కూర్చుంది. దూరంనుంచి ఓ జింక పరిగెత్తుతూ వచ్చింది. క్షణాల్లో ఆ జింకను సింహం పట్టేసుకుంది. జింక మెడను కొరికే సమ యంలో సింహాన్ని ఓ ఎలుక కొరికింది. అది కూడా గట్టిగా. అయ్యా.. ఆ జింక నా మిత్రుడు. దయచేసి వదిలేయండి అని బతిమలాడింది.
'నువ్వు కేవలం ఓ చిట్టెలుకవి. నీతో నాకు మాటలేంటీ? ఈ జింక నీ మిత్రుడంటే నమ్మాలా? అన్నది సింహం. అసలే ఆకలిగా ఉంది సింహానికి. అయినా క్షణం ఆలోచించింది. 'నువ్వు నిజంగా ఎలుక మిత్రుడివా?' అనడిగింది. జింకను 'అవును సింహరాజా' అంటూ నిర్భయంగా చెప్పింది.
సింహానికి నమ్మకమొచ్చింది. క్షణాల్లో చిట్టెలుకను తన పంజాలో తీసుకుని 'నువ్వు నాకు సాయం చేస్తావా? ఈ మాట వింటే నవ్వుతారు. ఎవరితో అనకు' అన్నది. ఎంత రాజువైనా.. మీకు కూడా నాతో పని పడుతుంది. తక్కువ అంచనావేయకు, చిట్టెలుక సామర్ధ్యాన్ని తక్కువ చేయకు' అన్నది చిట్టెలుక. చూద్దాం.. అనుకుంటూ జింకను వదిలేసింది.
ఎలుకను చూసి పదే పదే కించపరిచేట్లు మాట్లాడింది. నువ్వు నాకు సాయం చేస్తే జీవితాంతం నీకు స్నేహితుడిగా ఉంటాను.. అంటూ సింహం గట్టిగా నవ్వింది.
కొన్ని నెలల తర్వాత సింహం అడవిలో తిరుగుతూ ఉంది. ఓ చెట్టుకింద పడుకుందామని అనుకుంటుండగానే.. వలలో చిక్కుకుంది. ఆ సమయంలో వేటగాళ్లు దగ్గరలో ఉండే చెరువు దగ్గరకు నీళ్లు తాగడానికి వెళ్లారు. సింహం ఆ వలలో పడి గర్జించింది. దిక్కుతోచక బాధపడింది. రాజునైన నన్ను బంధించిందెవరూ? అంటూ కోప్పడింది. గింజుకున్నా వల రాలేదు.

ఆకాశం వైపు చూసి గట్టిగా వేడుకుంది.. తనకు ఎవరైనా సాయం చేస్తారేమోనని అరిచింది. సింహం పరిస్థితిని చూసిన జింక తన చిట్టెలుకకు చెప్పింది. తన మీద కూర్చోబెట్టుకుని సింహరాజు దగ్గరకు వచ్చింది. వలను గట్టిగా కొరికే సింది. సింహరాజు గర్వం అణిగిపోయింది. 'ఎవరైనా గొప్పవాళ్లే' అని మన సులో అనుకుంది. చిట్టెలుక ప్రతిభను చూసి మెచ్చుకుంది. జింకకూ కృతజ్ఞ తలు చెప్పింది. ఆ రోజు నుంచి చిరకాలంగా చిట్టెలుకకు స్నేహితుడిగా సింహరాజు ఉన్నది.

Once upon a time, two very close friends lived in a village. As time passed their friendship grew thicker and thicker. Now they were grown-up men. One day they decided to go and find work. They set off. Before leaving their village, they promised to stand by each other through thick and thin.
They took the oath of sincerity and assured each other of help in their hour of need. They had to pass through a jungle.
They had not gone far into the thick forest when they found themselves face to face with a big bear. The bear began to move towards them. They felt helpless and terrified.

One of them knew how to climb a tree. He at once caught hold of a strong branch and swung up the tree. The other could not climb. He had heard that the bear does not eat the dead.
So he lay down on the ground and held his breath pretending to be dead. Meanwhile, the bear came to him and shifted him. The bear left him.
When the bear had gone out of sight, the friend on the tree came down. He asked his friend, “Dear friend, what did the bear whisper in your ear?” The other replied quickly, ”The bear advised me not to trust a selfish friend.” Saying this he left him and went away.
